Well school it out for the mid-term and I very much feel like one of those ageing teachers pestering youth to answer annoying surveys. Yes I should have planned ahead and conducted these interviews during school time, however time just gets away... Hence I only interviewed one “youth” or teenager and I think I may have just found one of the more mature or down to earth teenagers… My quest to find out what is popular among youth may have yielded slightly different results to what I had hoped to achieve when I interviewed a 16 yr old.
Below is a transcript of some of the more relevant questions asked in the interview
Do you and your friends interact with social media, i.e. Facebook, blogs, twitter? If so what do you use?
Yes I do have a Facebook page, that I recently reactivated. All my friends have Facebook accounts but we don’t really use them to keep in contact, or if we do its just for private messages. I don’t like updating my status and I rarely upload pictures. I think my friends’ use it a lot more but I get a bit bored with it. I know my friends use Instagram and Snapchat as well. There are probably other apps they use as most of them all have smart phones.
How often do you interact with social media?
Maybe on a daily basis? I don’t know, I wouldn’t say I check it constantly… Probably more so of an evening or on the bus home from school… I know people at school who are constantly checking their phones, as soon as they get out of class or always updating their status or uploading photos
What types of books, movies, music, TV shows and video games do you and your friends enjoy?
Well my friends don’t really play video games, some of the guys may but I wouldn’t know which ones are popular. Most of my friends and I all read the Twilight series when they came out but that was ages ago and we don’t really like Twilight anymore, it’s become a bit too mainstream. My friends and I watch The Inbetweeners, and we loved the movie, also I quite enjoyed Skins. With music I don’t really listen to the latest hits, I am really into Aussie hiphop and some of my friends have started to listen to my music as a result of me listening to it. I like Seth Sentry, Muph N Plutonic, Urthboy, Drapht, and Butterfingers to name just a few. I don’t know if this type of music is popular with other people at my school but I’m sure it must be popular among my age group as when I go to hiphop festivals lots of the kids look about my age. I definitely think there is a trend amongst my friends and other high schoolers to try and be different and no one wants to be mainstream.
Final thoughts from this interview…
I found this interview interesting, as it seems that if something was deemed mainstream it was probably best to avoid. Perhaps there is popularity in anonymity or not being interested in mainstream popular culture? I also started to wonder if perhaps social media interactions were decreasing amongst youth, specifically teenagers or if indeed it was just a trend amongst this girl’s group of friends to be disconnected from popular social media networks? It will be interesting to see if social media interactions are on the increase and what types are the most popular amongst teenagers. Stay tuned for next week’s blog when I explore what is popular with young people.
